We are a regional resource for advanced care in a wide range of medical specialties. We are home to northern New Jersey’s Level I Trauma Center and to specialty programs such as the Center for Liver Diseases and the Comprehensive Stroke Center. The American Cancer Society started Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks to unite communities in the fight against this deadly disease. Today, Making Strides is the largest network of breast cancer events in the nation. The annual walk held in Newark is the largest in New Jersey. On Sunday, October 13, more than 100 University Hospital employees and their families, including 5 survivors, walked in downtown Newark, alongside Shereef Elnahal, President & CEO and Board Chairman Tanya Freeman. Our EMS team was on hand for any medical emergencies. Assemblywoman Munoz donated knitted purple caps to the newborns in the Mother Baby Unit to bring awareness to the Shaken Baby Syndrome. She also toured the labor and delivery rooms to learn the day to day experiences of the team. Featured is new mom, Ella, with baby Peyton. University Hospital celebrated its new moms, fathers, and others with a Baby Shower. New parents received vital information, enjoyed a wonderful lunch and bonded with one another. Thanks to the Foundation for University Hospital for its support of this special event. As part of the 2 nd Annual Prenatal – 3 Summit for expectant and parenting mothers, University Hospital provided vital health screenings. Assemblywoman Speight, Assemblywomen Tucker and Assemblywoman Timberlake led by example by having their blood pressure checked. University Hospital was awarded the Newark PROUD 2019 award for its support of the LGBTQ community. The Newark PROUD Awards are an annual recognition dedicated to honoring, highlighting, and celebrating achievement within and on behalf of the Greater Newark LGBTQ communities. First Lady Tammy Murphy is a staunch advocate for maternal health awareness. She is pictured with the University Hospital team who conducted screenings and staffed information tables at an event sponsored by Assemblywoman Speight, Assemblywomen Tucker and Assemblywoman Timberlake on that issue. In recognition of Transgender Awareness Week, University Hospital hosted a number of events. University Hospital remains committed to the care and well-being of everyone. We have been so successful in this effort because of the openness and understanding of different individuals and perspectives by our employees. As part of National Caregivers Day, Newark Council President Mildred Crump attended a Pop Up Health Clinic in the lobby of University Hospital. Participants received free flu vaccines and basic health screenings. There was also live music, yoga, and meditation classes. ‹ › Get With The Guidelines SM (GWTG) is an evidence-based program for in-hospital quality improvement. It puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals, helping to ensure that the care they provide to coronary artery disease, stroke and heart failure patients is aligned with the latest scientific guidelines.
